Agoura High School Girls Basketball

One of my favorite local sporting events in the Agoura Hills CA area is watching the Agoura High School Girls Basketball games, league games and tournaments.

This probably stems from the fact that my daughter plays for the high school team.  But I always continue to have a soft spot in my heart for all youth sports organizations and try to remain involved through volunteering and such, regardless if my kids are in those leagues or not.

The Agoura High School Girls Basketball program was fortunate to attract a new varsity and overall program coach this year in addition to the incredible coaches already present.  From the outset, during the summer high school games and tournaments, the coaching staff has really made a mark as overall leaders for competition, safety, physical and mental fitness, as well as creating an environment where the girls desire to go to practice.

Did you hear that correctly you may be asking yourself?  A kid that actually wants to go to practice and run suicide drills?  There has to be something there in the coaching to bring this about.  Along with the freshman/softmore team coach and junior varsity coach, as well as other coaching staff brought on, I really see the goal of moving these girls up from where they are to varsity as a natural foregone conclusion.

On some occasions all 3 teams practice and train together.  Additionally, each freshman player has a varsity "buddy" that watches out for them and provides some measure of guidance and mentoring.

At the beginning of the season the coaching staff arranged for a 6 week fitness program outside the gym whereby a local physical fitness trainer from Omega Sports Rehab would train the girls on the proper way to run and jump so as to curb knee and leg injuries.

I love that.  I don't see this kind of support at other schools for the players from a public school (with just about no money for the sports programs).  

Please please please try and attend as many of the freshman/softmore, junior varsity, and varsity games as possible as it really supports the kids, the program, it is the cheapest gig in town at only $7.00 for all 3 games, food and snacks are always available, and you never know, you may be witnessing one of the girls that will be the next WNBA star!!
